CAPABILITIES

The VIUScan is a handheld high resolution 3D color scanner. It can produce highly detailed, but incomplete, point clouds or meshes of static objects. Objects can be scanned while stationary on a table or even holding the item in your hand. Objects must be scanned with reference to reflective targets, which must be placed either on or around the object. The scanner must "see" at least 4 targets to register at all times. Targets can be pasted on the object itself, and/or on a pad under the object.

The scanner comes with a powerful laptop containing Rapidform XOR software for reverse engineering of 3D scans captured with the VIUScan. Rapidform XOR is extremely powerful and difficult to learn. The vendor provides a 5-day training course on use of the scanner and Rapidform XOR software.

SAFETY CONCERNS

  • Scanner does have LASERS, so don't look in the business end of it

DAMAGE CONCERNS

  • DO NOT DROP THE SCANNER!!!!! !!!!!! IT IS VERY VERY EXPENSIVE.

BASIC OPERATIONS

SCANNING:

  • Hook up scanner and laptop
  • Place targets on object / or position on registration pad
  • Start VX Elements
  • Hit New Scan
  • "scan"
  • Hit stop
  • Save scan for later use

REVERSE ENGINEERING

  • is WAY BEYOND what one could type in a Wiki. Requires training

CONSUMABLES

None

BASIC MAINTENANCE

None known, other than keeping all items free of dust

THINGS TO KNOW

  • This process requires patience
  • Scanner power, resolution and shutter speed must match the object being scanned
  • Shiny objects can be scanned by increasing power - or if that fails, spray the object with Tinactin to reduce shininess
